Phishing Emails- MIT will never ask for confidential information

January 22, 2014

It is critical for everyone to understand that MIT will *NEVER* ask you for your password, nor will MIT send you email requesting your password or other confidential information. Do not click on any links provided in these emails or submit any information requested by these emails. Immediately delete all email messages that request such information. They are social engineering phishing scams designed to steal your information.

Many of you may have heard about the Target data breach that was uncovered late in 2013 and early 2014. Target has provided a web resource link about the breach here. Target made the unfortunate move of sending a mass email from a service that was not from target.com and consequently looked like a phishing attack. What's worse, there have ALSO been phishing attacks where perpretators have sent emails pretending to be Target. The REAL Target email can be seen here at

All others out there are fake.

Also the offer of free credit monitoring by Target is real.  More information about this offer can be found here at
