Owl Videoconferencing Devices

It has come to our attention that some of our DLCs are using Meeting Owl Pro videoconferencing devices. This past June of 2022, these devices were revealed to have serious security vulnerabilities that could result in the exposure of all user data and content streamed over the device.

Because of the nature of the vulnerability a number of DLCs around MIT have discontinued use of these devices. If any of our supported DLCs are still using these devices it is critical that they be patched to remove the severe security vulnerabilities in question. They should not be used again until they are securely patched to version 1.8.0.29.

Users with private or confidential data or intellectual property information in presentation content should think carefully before using these devices or learn how to use them only as a USB accessory through a computer so they are never connected directly as an Internet of Things (IoT) appliance to the internet via WiFi.

If in doubt, only use Zoom to maintain data security.
