OS 10.10 Yosemite and iOS 8.1

Apple made some new announcements today regarding new technology and features. Of those announcements two directly affect users in SHASS:

1) Apple has made available a free OS upgrade to Yosemite, OS 10.10. For any machine you need for work please do not upgrade to this new Mac OS yet.

The known issues for OS 10.10 here at MIT can be found here:

For all critical systems, it is standard practice not to upgrade to a new operating system until the 2nd or 3rd OS patch so all the early and potentially crippling bugs are rooted out.

2) For iOS devices, iOS 8.1 is coming on Monday October 20th.2014.  Following the problematic buggy releases of iOS 8.01 and 8.02, Apple is poised to release the latest update of the iOS on Monday.  Given the unstable track record so far, we do not recommend anyone update to iOS 8.1 on any mobile devices yet.  We want to give it a bit of time to confirm it is safe and stable. We are hoping 8.1 will provide the stability that iOS 8, 8.01 and 8.02 have so far been unable to pull off.

Those users still running iOS 7 and earlier should not update to iOS 8 until we’re sure the coast is clear.
