IS&T’s Hardware Repair Services is OPEN

I am pleased to report to the SHASS Community that IS&T’s Hardware Repair Services in partnership with ComputerCare, is now officially open!

They are located at 56-129 in what was a former Athena Cluster facility.

I was able to meet with Andrew, who is the supervisor, and two of his technicians Alex and Kenny during their soft opening yesterday, Thursday August 28th.

The critical deets about the new Hardware Repair Services is as follows:

1) This service is restricted to MIT community members. You MUST show your MIT ID, so bring your MIT ID. They will need your ID number for the paperwork.

2) You may bring in work or personal machines.

3) The official computer brands they will be supporting (laptops and desktops) include but are not necessarily limited to:

Apple

Dell

HP

Lenovo

Asus

4) For all other brands like Razer and Alienware, Andrew has indicated they are more than willing to give it a try. Bring it in and they can make an assessment and attempt to contact the manufacturer to make the in-warranty repair. The only brand they indicated they’ve definitely experienced problems with attempting to repair is Microsoft Surface devices. Microsoft won’t release the parts and so those really need to go back to Microsoft for repair.

5) You may check in a machine for repair at EITHER the ATLAS Service Center in E17-106 or directly at the Hardware Repair Desk at 56-129.

6) For in-warranty repairs, please be aware computers MUST have the manufacturer’s warranty not a retailer warranty. Eg. AppleCare and not Best Buy’s Geek Squad warranty.

7) For out-of-warranty repairs, community members only pays for the cost of the replacement part. There is NO labor charge.

8) Many computer manufacturers will only keep parts around for a fixed time before they stop making and stocking the parts. For example, after 5 years, Apple stops making the parts and after 7 years they stop stocking the parts for their old computers. Other brands will undoubtedly have similar programs with varying cut off dates. However, even for older machines you may still bring in the machine and they will do what they can.

9) The official smart phone brands Hardware Repair Services will be supporting are Apple’s iPhone and Google’s Pixel phones.

I. For these devices they have a same day repair policy if possible for the 4 most recent models of each.

a) For now the iPhone models are iPhone 16, 15, 14, and 13.

b) For now, the Pixels models are Pixel 9, 8, 7, and 6.

II. They do screen repairs and battery replacements.

III. For things that are more serious or for any older phone models that they may need to order parts for will delay the process.

IV. They have indicated they are always willing to look at other phone brands too including Samsung and any other phone that runs Android. Just bring it in so they can evaluate and they will tell you what they can do.

10) The official tablet brands they will be supporting are iPads and iPad Pros. They can do screen and battery replacement on these devices. If you have other brand tablets, bring them in. They are happy to take a look and see what they can do.

11) They do NOT repair smart watches so no Apple Watch repairs.

12) Their hours of operation is the same as the ATLAS Service Center which is Monday–Friday, 8 am–5 pm, except holidays. No appointment is needed.

Please let us know if anyone has any questions!
