So every time you access the internet, your computer touches what are called Domain Name Servers (DNS) to determine where to send your browser on the internet to find web sites you’re trying to access. This DNS traffic is a detailed history of everywhere you visit. This data can be used to create a profile on you by data brokers, your ISP, and potentially even the government if they buy that information from data brokers or force your ISP to turn that data over.
Depending on which DNS servers you are using, your connection can be slow and the owner of the ISP can be recording where you are going. It is possible to potentially speed up your connection and prevent your ISP from tracking you by simply changing which DNS servers your computer uses to access the internet. There are DNS Servers like Open DNS or Cloudflare out there that do not record DNS queries. Definitely avoid DNS servers that track you like your ISP’s DNS Servers and Google’s DNS servers.
